A Journey Through Rustic Malaysia: Central Johor Railway Sketching Excursion
The beautiful monsoon skies, the scent of fresh pineapple fields, and the rustic charm of Malaysia’s railway towns—these were the ingredients that made the Central Johor Railway Sketching Excursion an unforgettable journey. Organized by My Art Space and supported by local community initiatives, this sketching trip with my son and fellow sketchers, was an inspiring dive into art, culture, and heritage.

The excursion began with a train ride that felt like a step back in time. From Renggam to Kluang, Paloh to Bekok, each railway town unfolded its unique story. The quaint architecture, faded shopfronts, and bustling local markets offered a treasure trove of sketching opportunities. As we sketched, the sights, sounds, and smells came alive—the cheerful chatter of vendors, the aroma of freshly brewed kopi from old-school cafés, and the earthy scent of rain-soaked soil.
One of the highlights was the *Annual Pineapple Harvest Ceremony* at Malaysia’s largest pineapple plantation in Simpang Renggam. Rows upon rows of golden fruit stretched as far as the eye could see. The air was filled with the vibrant energy of traditional Chinese dance and the thunderous beats of festive drums. Sketching this lively scene was a challenge, but it was also deeply rewarding. The warmth and hospitality of the locals made the experience even more special, as they eagerly shared stories about their community and culture.
What made this journey truly memorable was the camaraderie among fellow sketchers. The group, a mix of professionals and amateurs, exchanged techniques and ideas, creating an atmosphere of mutual inspiration. Observing master sketchers in action was a magical treat!
The final day’s sketch exhibition brought everything full circle. Seeing everyone’s interpretations of the journey was a celebration of creativity and diversity. From lush landscapes to intricate street scenes, each piece reflected the personal connection we had forged with Johor’s heritage.
It’s more than just a sketching trip; it’s an immersive experience where art, culture, and community come together. Whether you’re a seasoned sketcher or simply looking for inspiration, I cannot recommend this journey enough.
